Class Description:

In this class, students will learn about traditional glass painting and how to apply paint as a grisaille upon which to place sheet glass, frit, and other accessory glass. We will make our own “pre-made material” in the kiln with which to use as brushstrokes and textures. We will make designed panels as well as spontaneous panels in response to the pre-made material. Ultimately, heat and gravity have the final word in revealing the painterly image.

Glass is perhaps the ultimate material with which to create light-filled, expressive paintings.  Even if you are not a painter, you can learn how to use glass in its many forms to create organic shapes, strokes, and textures, combined with traditional glass paints to create images of great beauty.  This workshop is not about rendering something perfectly, but about exploring what glass can do if we “provoke” it in certain ways.

Whilst making “The Resurrection Window” in Kansas, Tim sought out the expertise of Narcissus Quagliata, and together they dove deep into the possibilities and potential of kiln formed glass as a material for expressive image making. Tim seeks to push this medium not only in his work but though the education of those currently working in glass as well as other media.
