This is a very efficient coldworking tool that allows me to try many new glass projects and techniques. It also helps me easily correct some shape- and surface related problems that would have previously spoil my work.

The machine is surprisingly silent for all the power it provides. Only the 120 grit makes some noise, something comparable to a washing machine.

On the downside there are few minor things worth mentioning. The instructions manual says nothing about maintenance (like cleaning) and how to glue diamond disks to the metal base disks (it matters to which side of the base you glue the sticker on and it needs to be centred exactly, to avoid vibrations).

The water piping fittings are not compatible* with european standards, neither are the electric plugs. The same goes for the optional water pump that comes with a rather long 10 m cable, even if it is meant to be plugged into the extension socket provided right there on the back side of the grinder. *WARM GLASS NOTE: The machine and the pump are supplied with a UK plugs which meet European Standards the fittings for the water are high pressure water fittings and the pump is supplied with pipe adaptors so it can be used out of the box without the need for any other fittings. The length of the cable on the pump is to allow the plug to be positioned well away from the water for safety reasons.

Cold working is one of the most important tasks when working with warm glass. I was convinced that I could manage without one of these, however, now that I have invested in my Glastar variable speed lap machine I can honestly say that it is well worth the investment. It produces a great finish on the edges of my work with so much less effort. Thanks very much to Warm Glass for delivering this in super fast time once my decision was made.

I recently purchased one of these and agree with Jade regarding the purchase of a 70 grit disc to add to your collection but remember to buy a steel disc too! Take care when initially setting up your discs as you need to make sure you mount the discs onto the correct side of your steel plate base. The 8inch is good for me as I only plan to make small pieces. I guess if you have the space and the money the larger one would be best.

I decided to invest in one of these after I used one on a class at Warm Glass, I don't regret it (despite the cost).

It's very powerful and the only warning I would give is that I suggest that you get the 70 grit disc as well as you'll probably need the extra ooomph from the coarser grit.
